The Pacific sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) is one of the most spectacular fish an angler can hook: a tall cobalt sail, a long bill, explosive speed and wild jumps across the surface. It is also one of the reasons sport fishermen travel to Panama. This guide explains when to fish for sailfish in the Gulf of Panama, how we target them and how to plan your trip from Vista Mar Marina.
Sailfish Season in the Gulf of Panama: May to December
On one-day trips from Vista Mar Marina into the Gulf of Panama, the sailfish season runs from May to December. The strongest action is usually from May through August, when warm, nutrient-rich water and large schools of bait bring sailfish within range of a day trip. September through November remain productive, and December is good again before the fish thin out in January and February.
On multi-day expeditions to the South of Las Perlas and Piñas Bay, the best sailfish months are July, August and September, with good fishing in June and October. You can compare every species month by month in our Panama fishing season calendar.
Why the Gulf of Panama Holds Sailfish
Sailfish follow the bait. In the Gulf of Panama, currents, temperature breaks and plankton-rich water concentrate sardines, ballyhoo and small tunas, and the sailfish hunt them, often working in groups and herding bait balls with their sails. Before each trip we look at sea-surface temperature and chlorophyll, then confirm it on the water with birds, bait and current lines. Learn more in our guide to water temperature and chlorophyll for sailfish and marlin.
How We Fish for Sailfish
- Teasers and trolling: we pull teasers to raise fish to the surface, then present a bait or lure. See how fishing teasers work.
- Natural and live bait: rigged ballyhoo and live bait are deadly when sailfish are feeding.
- Circle hooks: they hook the fish in the corner of the mouth, which is safer for the fish and ideal for release.
- Light tackle: sailfish give their best fight on balanced light tackle.
Catch and Release
We encourage catch and release for sailfish: keep the fish in the water, take a quick photo and revive it before letting it go. Read why in Catch & Release: the heartbeat of billfish conservation.
