Majo Fishing Lodge Panama fishing experience

What to Bring on a Fishing Trip or Boat Tour in Panama: The Complete List

A good day at sea starts at home, with a well-packed bag. If you are going fishing or on a boat tour along Panama’s Pacific Riviera, this list will help you remember everything. And because the fishing gear is included with Majo Fishing Lodge, you will carry less than you think.

What is already included in your fishing trip

You do not need to bring any gear on our fishing trips. Every trip includes:

  • Fishing license.
  • Rods, reels and tackle.
  • Fighting chair.
  • Ice and water.
  • Air-conditioned cabin with a bathroom.
  • Captain and mate.
  • Cleaning and filleting of your catch.

Drinks and snacks can be added for US$20 per person on one-day fishing trips. The Booze Cruise has its own beer and soda combo for US$10 per person.

Packing list

For the sun

  • Water-resistant sunscreen. The sun at sea is stronger than it feels. Apply it before you leave and again during the day.
  • A cap or hat that will not blow away.
  • Sunglasses. Polarized lenses help you see the water and the fish.
  • A light long-sleeve shirt, ideally with UV protection.

Clothes and shoes

  • Comfortable, light clothes that dry quickly.
  • Non-slip shoes, such as sneakers or sandals with a good sole.
  • A towel and a change of clothes for the ride home.
  • A light jacket or windbreaker for an early start or a windy ride back.

For your health

  • Seasickness medication, if you need it, taken before the trip as directed.
  • Your personal medication.
  • A light breakfast before you go: it helps prevent seasickness.

To remember the day

  • Phone or camera, ideally in a waterproof bag.
  • A power bank if you plan to take a lot of photos and videos.

To take your catch home

  • A cooler in your car, if you want to take your catch home. The crew cleans and fillets the table fish you keep, such as tuna and dorado. Billfish are always released.

Tips to avoid seasickness

  • Eat a light breakfast and drink water before you go.
  • Stay on deck in the fresh air and look at the horizon.
  • If you are prone to seasickness, take your medication before boarding, not once you feel unwell.
  • Tell the crew how you feel; they will help.

Before you leave home

  • Confirm your departure time. Fishing trips usually leave around 8:00 AM, and we confirm the exact time when you book.
  • Plan the drive: Vista Mar Marina is in San Carlos, at Km 92 of the Pan-American Highway, a short drive from Coronado and Río Hato and about an hour and a half from Panama City.
  • If you prefer not to drive, add round-trip transportation: US$300 from Panama City or US$100 from Buenaventura or Río Hato.
