Blue Marlin Panama

Marlin Fishing in Panama: Best Months, Blue & Black Marlin, and Trip Options

Marlin fishing in Panama is one of the main reasons serious offshore anglers travel to the Pacific side of the country. Blue marlin and black marlin can both be part of the program, but the right trip depends on season, range, bait, current, temperature breaks and the amount of fishing time available.

Black marlin with Majo Fishing Lodge: black marlin are highly migratory and can show up in many areas, including the Gulf of Panama. In more than 22 years of our own fishing records, the best odds have been south of the Pearl Islands and toward Piñas Bay, where deep ocean water meets the continental drop-off close to reefs that hold a lot of bait, such as the well-known Zane Grey Reef. For the best chance, we recommend a multi-day Pro Fishing Expedition or a Hacienda del Mar package of 3 to 5 days (minimum 3). One-day Pro Fishing trips from Vista Mar Marina mainly target blue marlin, sailfish, tuna and mahi-mahi.

Majo Fishing Lodge operates exclusively from Vista Mar Marina in San Carlos, Panama. From this base we run one-day offshore charters and longer multi-day expeditions toward the Pearl Islands and extended Pacific fishing grounds.

When Is the Best Time for Marlin Fishing in Panama?

There is no single month that guarantees marlin. Productive periods change with current, bait concentration, water temperature and the fishing range you can cover. A fisherman limited to a one-day trip can see a very different opportunity from an angler who can fish multiple days and travel farther south.

Before choosing dates, review our Panama fishing season calendar. It separates one-day Gulf of Panama opportunities from multi-day programs toward the southern Pearl Islands and Piñas Bay.

Blue Marlin vs Black Marlin in Panama

Both species are powerful billfish, but they are not identical. Black marlin typically have rigid pectoral fins that do not fold flat against the body, while blue marlin have movable pectoral fins. Body shape, dorsal-fin profile and markings also help with identification.

One-Day Marlin Fishing from Vista Mar Marina

A one-day offshore charter is the right format for anglers who want a serious fishing day without committing to an expedition. The crew plans the day around the best available water, bait, current structure and target species rather than simply running to a fixed waypoint.

Our Panama fishing charters depart from Vista Mar Marina in San Carlos, convenient for guests staying in Buenaventura, Río Hato, Coronado and Panama’s Pacific Riviera.

  • Hatteras 40 FT: full-day offshore program for anglers who want comfort, range and a dedicated sportfishing platform.
  • Stamas 39 FT: fast express-style option for professional fishing and full-day offshore trips.

Why Multi-Day Trips Change the Marlin Game

For anglers whose main goal is marlin, extra fishing days create more flexibility. A multi-day program gives the crew time to adjust the route around weather and ocean conditions and to work farther from the normal one-day range when the situation justifies it.

Two important extended-range options are our Pearl Islands fishing charters and custom Piñas Bay fishing expeditions. These are not simple day trips; they are planned as multi-day programs around target species, current fishing information and travel range.

What We Look for Before Chasing Marlin

Good marlin fishing is rarely about one isolated number on a chart. Our planning combines sea-surface temperature, chlorophyll, current edges, bait, weather, structure and recent fishing information. The goal is to identify productive water and then adapt the fishing plan as conditions change.
