Yellowfin Tuna Fishing in Panama: How We Find Tuna in the Pacific

Yellowfin tuna fishing in Panama is not simply a matter of running to yesterday’s GPS mark. Tuna move with food and water. At Majo Fishing Lodge, the search starts before the boat leaves the marina: we look at the larger oceanographic picture and then confirm what the ocean is showing us in real time.

We Look for Conditions, Not Just Coordinates

A productive tuna area can change quickly. Sea-surface temperature, chlorophyll, current direction, water-color breaks and bait concentrations help us decide where to begin looking. Once offshore, birds, dolphins, surface activity and visible bait can confirm that the food chain is active.

SST and Chlorophyll for Yellowfin Tuna

SST and chlorophyll are tools, not magic numbers. We use them to identify transitions and areas where different water masses interact. A temperature break or chlorophyll edge becomes much more interesting when it also lines up with current, structure and life on the surface.

Birds, Dolphins and Bait: Reading What Is Happening Now

Satellite information gets us into the conversation; what we see offshore makes the final decision. Working birds can reveal bait being pushed toward the surface. Dolphins can be an important clue when yellowfin are feeding in the same ecosystem. Flying fish, bait showers and surface explosions can turn a quiet patch of ocean into the place where we stop and fish.

Why We Leave a Fishing Mark

One of the hardest decisions in offshore fishing is knowing when to move. A historically productive coordinate does not guarantee fish today. If the water, current, bait and surface life do not support the mark, we keep searching. The objective is to fish the conditions that exist now rather than the memory of a previous trip.

Techniques for Yellowfin Tuna in Panama

The technique depends on how the tuna are behaving. Trolling can help locate scattered fish and cover water. Live bait becomes extremely effective when tuna are concentrated and feeding. Casting and jigging can produce when fish are visible or holding deeper in the water column. The crew must be ready to change techniques as the situation develops.

Where We Fish for Tuna

Our Pacific fishing program can range from waters accessible from Vista Mar Marina toward the Gulf of Panama and Las Perlas to longer offshore expeditions when the objective and conditions justify the run. Destination is never selected from a marketing map alone; weather, range, water conditions and the target species determine the plan.

Tuna Fishing from Vista Mar Marina

Majo Fishing Lodge operates from Vista Mar Marina in San Carlos, a convenient Pacific departure point for anglers staying around Buenaventura, Río Hato and Coronado. Visitors to the area can also read our guide to fishing near Buenaventura and Río Hato.
